The most significant and popular tourist destination in Chernivtsi region which attracts tourists from all over the world is Khotyn fortress with over 1,000 years of history. The fortress is situated in the outskirts of Khotyn city on the bank of the Dnister river. The complex of structures includes a stone castle, fortification walls and ditches, the church of Saint Alexander Nevskiy, the remnants of the Turkish era buildings and other structures. Khotyn fortress - the most powerful medieval fortification of Eastern Europe which is associated with the extraordinary events of European significance, place of the fateful battle of Moldova troops, Ottoman Empire, Rzeczpospolita, Ukrainian Cossacks and later - the Russian Empire. In the middle of XIX century the citadel lost its military importance and was transferred to the local community. Khotyn fortress is a historical monument of national importance which granted the status of historical and architectural reserve and among the most interesting tourist sights in Ukraine became one of the seven wonders of it. On the territory of the reserve there is a museum, a shooting gallery and a showroom for the tourists. |
